About a year ago my aunt visited me and handed me a bag. "I thought that you could do something with these", she said. I opened the bag. Inside were my late uncle's ties. I was speechless - which is a rare occasion for me. Some ties were still in a knot and I swear I could even smell his cologne.
It took months for me to begin the project. Initally I untied them and hung them on the design wall where they remained for weeks. I decided that I would begin with the silk ties and leave the woollen ones for a later date.
This quilt was a challenge as these ties were put away 30 years ago . A lot of them were frayed , stained and discolored. I decided that damaged pieces would go (with one exception) and that any stains were to be included in the quilt. The pieces ended up quite small so in order to increase the size of the quilt I added raw silk . My friend Irene quilted it and this is the end result. - Nonie
